The development of mobile technology is rapidly changing the environment and the way of learning in school. According to the Google report in 2013, the popularity rate of smart phone in Taiwan has reached 51%. In addition to facilitating communication, smart phones have made ubiquitous E-learning more accessible and mobile learning more popular. Recently, several attempts have been made to understand the benefits of integrating smart phones and related applications, such as email and Facebook, into English language education. In contrast to short messaging service (SMS), multimedia messaging service (MMS) can deliver richer information, such as pictures, audio and video files, to enhance the interest of English learners. However, previous research on SMS- or MMS-based English learning has tended to focus on improving English vocabulary rather than enhancing the learning of interactive English conversation. As mobile learning is gaining much popularity, the viability of MMS in learning English is worthy of investigation. The growing number of international tourists in Taiwan has made learning English for tourism become important, but Taiwanese students’ English ability is generally poor. Therefore, based on the concept of Dual Code Theory (Paivio, 1986), MMS-based tourism English learning activities will be developed to investigate the viability of MMS in learning tourism English. Through the quasi-experimental design, the experimental group will use LINE as learning platform via smart phones, and the contrast group will employ Facebook on PC. The study aims to examine how the mobile MMS (i.e., Line) and PC MMS (i.e., FB) exchanges differ in terms of learning tourism English. The participants will be college students in the Department of Applied English. Data collection consists of pre- and post-test, MMS messages, questionnaire, and student interviews. The quantitative data will be processed with SPSS, including t-test, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and correlation. Content analysis will be utilized to analyze qualitative data. In the digital era, youngsters prefer to use MMS as a leisure and communication tools. It is hoped that such function can be leveraged to support English language learning and make learning more diversified and ubiquitous. Results of this study may suggest a broader implication of using MMS as a supplementary tool for learning as well as provide important reference for future researchers in the related fields.
