摘要 The globalization of sport has increased athletes’ mobility across national and institutional boundaries. Transnational migration, however, may require athletes to negotiate professional obligations, cultural identities, and sociopolitical contexts. This qualitative study examined the role conflicts experienced by Taiwanese professional basketball players competing in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), with particular attention to tensions between their roles as CBA club players and members of the Chinese Taipei men’s national basketball team. In this study, “Taiwanese” refers to the athletes’ geographical and sociocultural background, whereas “Chinese Taipei” denotes the official designation for the national team in international sports. Drawing on role theory and transnational identity perspectives, we conducted semi-structured interviews with seven players and analyzed the data using thematic analysis. Three themes were identified: (1) intra-role conflict arising from changes in competitive status and functional responsibilities within the CBA; (2) inter-role conflict between club responsibilities and national team commitments, shaped by scheduling pressures, physical demands, and geopolitical sensitivities; and (3) active identity negotiation through role reinterpretation, communication, prioritization, and strategic non-engagement. The findings indicate that role conflict is not solely a negative consequence of transnational mobility but may also constitute a dynamic process through which athletes reconstruct and integrate multiple identities. This study makes a primary contribution to sport psychology by advancing an understanding of identity negotiation and role conflict during transnational career and cultural transitions, particularly in relation to athletes’ psychological adaptation and sense of belonging. It also provides practical guidance for professional leagues, national governing bodies, and sports organizations seeking to support athletes as they navigate complex identity- and role-related experiences.
