摘要 This article traces the triangular set of relations between the European Union (EU), China, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since 2001, when China entered the World Trade Organisation. Recently, the EU took note of China’s authoritarianism and assertive foreign policy towards the South China Sea, which conflicted with a rules-based order and contributed to the EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy, with ASEAN as a central player. This article examines the developments, shifts, and critical junctures in the emerging EU–China–ASEAN triangle over the past two decades concerning politico-economic relations, exploring its emergence shifts and current situation. In 2020, the EU and ASEAN established a strategic partnership to elevate bilateral ties and commonly support a rules-based order. Upon analysis, it becomes evident that, at least in the international political economy, the lenses of rules-based order versus power politics are too static. While there is not yet an interregional trade agreement between the EU and ASEAN, the EU–ASEAN axis has indirectly impacted China’s approach and dragged China into a rules-based approach towards ASEAN. The triangular dynamics place ASEAN in an advantageous position within the triangle as the EU and China vie for economic and strategic influence.
