摘要This paper is an examination of the theory and practice of teaching the
topic sentence in English as a foreign language at the college level in Taiwan
with particular reference to contrastive rhetoric. The part about theory is a
general review of the literature and its applicability in terms of pedagogy. The
part about practice is devoted to an examination of EFL writing samples to ver·
ify claims in contrastive rhetoric studies and what is to be adopted in teaching
paragraph structure in classroom settings. Contrastive rhetoric and its differe nt
implications are discussed so as to define its pedagogical applications in teaching
EFL writing. Overall, pedagogy in EFL writing by teaching the topic sentence
and better instruments and more clearly defined paradigms of L1 and L2 writing
modes in contrastive rhetoric are recommended.
