摘要 This study examines the formation and evolution of multicultural identity in Singapore, with particular focus on the role of media and state policy in constructing cultural difference and national identity. Drawing on Stuart Hall’s theories of cultural identity and media representation, the paper analyzes how Singapore has promoted its “unity in diversity” framework through governmentality and media narratives. Traditional media tend to reproduce a depoliticized, harmonious image of ethnic relations, while digital and social media provide alternative spaces for marginalized groups and younger generations to negotiate and contest dominant identity discourses. This study further reveals how institutional inequalities—especially in language, media access, and education—undermine the cultural agency of minority communities. In response to the challenges posed by globalization and immigration, the paper argues for the development of a more inclusive and participatory form of deep multiculturalism, as well as an expanded public sphere for interethnic dialogue and identity pluralism. The findings contribute to ongoing debates on cultural governance in Asian societies and offer critical insights into the theory and practice of multiculturalism.
