摘要 | This study is an attempt to examine Taiwanese graduate students' reading habits, problems, perspectives, and suggestions. Subjects were 30 students (13 major in natural sciences, and 17 in social sciences) from Taiwan studying at a major midwestern university in the United States. Materials were a questionnaire for interviews and four students' logs of reading difficulties. The results of the interviews and the students' logs indicate that reading for academic knowledge is their primary incentive for reading. Of the students 70 percent indicated that their level of reading competence to be "good," but they spent considerably more time on reading than native students. They encountered difficulties in discussing text content when trying to use their own words in class. They thought that lack of vocabulary and background knowledge were two important factors in their reading difficulties, and that they had never really learned reading skills in class. |
