摘要 Chung-Cheng Road in Tamsui, Taipei, Taiwan is an old street with a history over 200 years. Until 1990’s it had been the major socio-cultural and economic center in the region. This old street had gone through a major physical transformation due to urban development and changes of social space as local tourism thrived in the past twenty years. The development of tourism dwelled upon rich local history and unique scenery has landed the area one of the most popular tourist sites nationwide while poses a great challenge to the operation of local community life which is seen as having the characteristic of representing specific locality and being distinguished from others. The research is based on two field works conducted in 1989 and 2010, focusing the use of the old street, the existence of behavior settings and their organization in it, including the nature of behavior setting programs, their spatial and temporal operation patterns, degree of social communication among settings, and the use of environmental cues communicating behavior rules. Emphasis is also focused on the dynamic relationship between public and private space use, tourist and communal activities that characterizes social meanings of the old street. The old street in the new form supports twice as many of settings as in twenty-one years ago, and replaces the major role for community daily life with tourist consumer services. The shrinking of local community settings in the midst of thriving tourist settings indicates changes of socio-spatial meanings in the old street environment. Settings are found to be more physically mobile to support tourist activities but not for meaningful social interactions between local residents. Public space in the street becomes service areas for tourist consumer activities and force out local community activities. Norms and general consensus based on collective understanding of environmental cues through time in the old days no longer function as guidance for proper behavior. Instead, numerous signs and law reinforcement by public administration become effective for behavior guidance making the street a constricted public realm. Saturated in delocalized tourist consumerism and fierce commercial competition the history of the old street is only a fabrication through interplay of the physical environment, commercial advertisements, and tourist behavior. The local community, which is the root of the history, seems to be absent but facing a great challenge of disconnection between physical locale and social meanings of the environment.
