摘要 This study is to examine how adolescent novels in English are relevant to the experiences of teenagers, and how adolescent literature can be used specifically for EFL low achievers in Taiwan. Reading appropriate literary works not only can improve low achievers' language ability, but also help them think about culture and human values. Authentic literature at easy reading levels can arouse junior college students' motivation to study English. The approach taken in this paper is lased on the knowledge that students in junior college are searching for their identity along with their academic study. As Lauren Myracle suggests, adolescent literature helps teenagers think aoout problems they face while growing up. One contemporary young adult novel offers a good example of real social and psychological contexts: Louis Sachar's Holes. By reading and discussing topics related to teenage experience in this novel, a group of students can learn English in an interesting story context relevant to their own experiences, gain cultural understanding in the conversational and repetitive sentence patterns, and achieve personal growth with the characters. Furthermore, employing the Paideia classroom model suggested by Roberts and Billings, an EFL ,teacher may use a combination of didactic instruction, coaching, and Socratic seminar methods to enrich the quality of language instruction with a sustained content-based syllabus. In this way, /Ianguage-Iearning activities can go hand in hand with the development of the whole person.
